Fractions of a Set
Materials
- Grid sheets, pages 149-150 (1 per student)
- Markers (2 per student—one dark for writing and one light for coloring)
- Scissors (1 per student)
- 12" x 18" construction paper
- Glue sticks (1 per student)
- Pencils (1 per student)
- The completed project prepared by the teacher before the lesson (leaving out the bottom three-fourth values so that students can find them on their own)
Introduction
Although students first need to understand fractions as parts of wholes, eventually they also must understand fractions as parts of sets. This Math Art project is a simple but effective way to introduce them to this topic.
The Project
Do not begin by showing students a previously constructed project. Instead, let students examine the grids (sets) on pages 149 and 150.
